Sea kayak expedition in Steigen and Hamarøy
The history of civilization and the landscape around Steigen and Hamarøy was a big inspiration to the Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun. Beeing brought up in harsh conditions was a big influence on his writing, something you will understand if you visit one of Norway's most outstanding archipelagos.
First settles of inhabitants build up small villages in two reasons: fishing and agriculture. To day most people have "ordinary" jobs, but still many have agriculture and fishing as their main income. However it' easy to understand why people still live here.
To participate on this trip you don't have to have experience with kayak, everything is set up so you will learn all of the basic skills before you set out to sea. The distances are pleasant, and of course this is not the landscape you want to rush through.
All accommodation: tents.
Day 1:
We meet in Skutvik for a briefing of the schedule before we are transported to Jektevika. Here you will get a kayak and paddling clothes (jacket and life vest). You will learn how to handle emergencies and what to do if anyone gets in the water. After lunch we start paddling to our first tent camp for the night.
Day 2:
By using Google Earth you can see the route for the next few days.
Nes – Nesstraumen – Kaldvågen – Drageidet
Day 3:
Glimmen – Presteidet – Prestvika – Tranøysundet.
With our tent camp in Tranøy we can see the magnificent Lofot-wall (Lofotveggen)
Day 4:
When we paddle past the lighthouse on Tranøy we will cross the westfjord (vestfjorden). This is the place where fishermen do their commercial cod fishing in the wintertime. If the weather is nice we get the chance to study the amazing wildlife, and if we are lucky we get to see whale. Camp: Straumhavn.
Day 5:
After at mountain hike on Hammarøyskaftet we head for Dalsvær.
Day 6:
We paddle through Økssundet towards Skutvik where we say good bye and share unforgettable memories together.
